Basil Paterson has a long history of providing English lessons to students both domestically and internationally. It all started in 1929 when Basil Paterson established the school. He believed that learning should be personalised for the individual and the complete focus to be on the individual learner.

All teaching staff are qualified and passionate that like to motivate them to do their best while also making lessons enjoyable. Along with learning inside the classroom, the school also provides outside social and cultural programs offered for the students.

The school is also the most significant test centre in Scotland for IELTS and Cambridge Examinations. Therefore, the school also provides one of the best preparation programs for these tests to ensure maximum success for students. The students will also experience an environment where the tests will take place.

By booking a course at Basil Paterson, students will improve their confidence when engaging in conversation for work, study, or travel. They will grow in independent study skills, gain valuable skills, knowledge, and strategies for undertaking specific exams, achieve intercultural competence while learning with international students. Finally, they will gain an overall increased motivation with courses that are challenging but also inspirational.

LOCATION

The school is located in Edinburgh, right in the centre of New Town. This learning environment is unique for international students, where they can learn together with the domestic students who usually are studying for UK qualifications or the CELTA course.

The building of the school is also historically significant as it was built in the 1700s by John and James Williamson. They are known to have contributed to the construction of the White House in the USA. There is official recognition of this link with the creation of a plaque outside of Basil Paterson Edinburgh.

Getting to Edinburgh is a breeze with over 100 direct flights to Edinburgh worldwide. The city is easily reached from London, which is just an hour-long flight and it is well connected with other UK cities by train.

The city itself is well-linked with public transport. You can reach many places in town with the use of buses, taxis, or trains.

MAJOR SIGHTS NEARBY

This location has different beautiful sights to explore nearby, ranging from cultural and historic buildings, natural landscapes, museums & galleries, shopping, and restaurant destinations. The school is located within the New Town of Edinburgh. This means that students will be located right in the centre of town.

Some of the many beautiful attractions available within walking distance include St. Andrew Square, Charlotte Square, Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh Castle, Scott Monument, Waverly Station, and many beautiful shops, restaurants, and social meeting places along the streets in the centre of town.

AVAILABLE SOCIAL AND CULTURAL PROGRAMMES

Basil Paterson believes in continued learning outside of the classroom so that the learning process is not disrupted. This is why many social and cultural programs are offered to students. It is an excellent chance for the students to learn about Scotland and its capital and make new international friends.

During the summer season, there are eight activities offered per week and at least four during the other year. The plan is not fixed; it changes regularly each week, considering the ages and interests of the students. Most of the activities are already included in the fees, but some may require a small payment, such as the various theatre visits or Scottish Ceilidh dancing. Booking service is also available for those that would like to experience other areas of Scotland during the weekend.

The following is a sample plan for one week of social and cultural activities:

Monday: Guided Walking Orientation Tour

At the beginning of the students’ arrival, they will be offered a walking tour around Edinburgh. A cultural program coordinator will show the students this beautiful city from the interesting landmarks to valuable hints, tips, and city tales.

Tuesday: Visit Cramond

Cramond is located only a short bus ride from the city centre. It is located on the outskirts of the city. And has its beach area and even an island that can be explored. It is a perfect location to spend out in the sun during the summer months and one for relaxation in autumn.

Wednesday: Traditional Storytelling Event

This is an on-campus social activity where professional storytellers visit the school and talk about traditional stories, culture, and an opportunity for students to participate in their own words. This is guaranteed to be a fun experience.

Thursday: Visit the Scottish Parliament and Arthur’s Seat

Students will be able to visit and walk through the Scottish parliament building and learn about its fascinating architecture. Then, students will be able to climb Arthur’s Seat, which is an extinct volcano located in Edinburgh. The top students will be able to experience a magnificent view of the city and the Parliament building.

Friday: Scottish Ceilidh Dancing

This is a perfect ending to the week by interacting with Scottish music and dancing. Students will become familiar with traditional dances that are likely to be featured at Scottish weddings or celebrations.
